5 things to consider when building your wedding gift list

The Wedding Shop[1] explains how to build the ultimate wedding gift list for your big day

Creating a wedding gift list can be one of the most enjoyable parts of planning your big day, and has lots of added benefits, too.

Not only will it save your guests the time and effort of finding a suitable present, but in turn you’ll also receive gifts you actually like, rather than the kind of items that end up hidden away at the back of the cupboard.

So, when it comes to building your own wedding gift list, where do you start? We called upon the team at the UK’s longest established gift service, The Wedding Shop[2], to ask their top tips and advice – here’s what they had to say…

Upgrade basic items

Pink bathroomThe Wedding Shop

If, like many couples, you have been living together for a while before you get married, a wedding gift list is the perfect opportunity to upgrade the everyday items you have in your house or flat already.

Whether it’s lavish new bed linen, gorgeously soft towels, or that coffee maker you’ve both always wanted, your gift-list is the perfect opportunity to ask for those little luxuries that will make daily life that bit more special.

Choose gifts that reflect your personalities

Pink armchairThe Wedding Shop

It’s always best for you both to be involved in the gift-list building process from the very start – that way, members from each of your families will be able to purchase items with either one or both of you in mind.

At The Wedding Shop[3], we also offer a range of experiences[4], or you can opt for a honeymoon fund[5], so that you’ll have something special to look forward to after the big day. With our flexible service, you’ll be able to get the gifts that you really want.

Include a range of price points

Blue sofaThe Wedding Shop

Make sure to include a wide range of price points within your selection. You’ll be surprised at how generous your guests will be, so it’s a good idea to include higher-priced items, too!

Plus, at The Wedding Shop[6] we offer the option of Group Gifting, allowing multiple guests to contribute to those pricier items, so you can list that sofa you’ve always wanted.

Start building your list early

It’s a good idea to create your gift list before you send out your invitations, so that you can let your guests know how to purchase you a gift at the same time.

The Wedding Shop also offers complementary insert cards, which you can include within your invitations to let guests know how to find your gift list. Alternatively, you can send out a URL link to your personal list, or add it to your wedding website.

Be flexible

A lot can change in the space of a year, so it’s important to opt for a service that gives you the flexibility that you’ll need.

At The Wedding Shop, we give you the option to swap products before finalising your gift[7] selection, so that you can receive the gifts that you really want.

The Wedding Shop delivers flexibility and unlimited choice, with a personal touch and expert advice from our Gift Gurus[8]. Combine products you love with honeymoon and cash contributions and even add a charity fund that is close to your heart. Create your ultimate gift list[9] today at weddingshop.com[10].

The ultimate groom’s gifts to give your husband-to-be on your wedding day

Hawes and Curtis three piece suitHawes and Curtis

The big day is fast approaching, but what do you get the man who has everything – he is marrying you, after all. Here’s seven special groom’s gifts[1] sure to ease his nerves come the day of the wedding…

1. His favourite tipple in a fancy hip flask

Give your other half some dutch courage by sending him a mini bottle of his favourite liquor in a leather-lined hip flask. This handsome one from Aspinal of London[2] is just about smart enough to swig on in moments of need throughout the day.

2. A personalised print

If it’s a sentimental gift you’re after, a personalised art print should do the trick. This one here from Bookishly[3] charts the night sky from the exact location and date of your wedding, making it a totally unique gift that marks when your star aligned forever.

3. Cigars

If your other half is partial to a cigar, treat him and his fellow groomsmen to a box full of them from J Cortes[4]. These ones are nice and mild, so a puff or two won’t leave them smelling to high heaven.

4. A watch

One of the pricier options when it comes to groom’s gifts, giving your man a watch will at least ensure he’s at the top of the aisle on time. To make it extra special, opt for engraving on the reverse of the watch face. Links of London have a great selection of more affordable timepieces, like this rose gold plated Noble style.[6]

5. The power of words

Go all-out romantic and show him why you’re marrying him with a letter, fun craft or even a book full of love notes. PaperBoundLove[7], via Etsy, will create a custom hardcover book, filled with 100 pages of why you want to marry your soulmate. There’s a number of different design options, with a number of sizes and paper types.

6. Cufflinks

Present him with a very special pair of cufflinks for the big day. There’s a whole host of designs out there to choose from, from engraved numbers to wacky shapes and sizes. If he’s partial to a designer brand, this sterling silver pair from Hermes[8] are sure to impress.

7. A silver card holder

Sticking with the silver theme, this gift may seem simple, but get it engraved with something special – maybe your initials, wedding date or even a loving message – and he’ll think of you every time he uses it. This sterling silver one from Tiffany[9] fits either business cards or credit cards.

Make your wedding stand out with an amazing couples hand casting

Hand casting

If you’re looking for a showstopper of an idea that really makes your special day stand out, how about casting your newlywed hands entwined as part of your actual ceremony?

With a bit of planning and the help of a creative friend, one couple made sure that they would have a permanent and tangible reminder of their magical day. Using a hand casting kit from The Edinburgh Casting Studio[1], the bride and groom dipped their hands into a pot of casting jelly to create a sculpture of their hands in a classic, romantic pose.

Hand casting kit

The groom, Rob was blown away with the results: “We loved it so much – just an amazing unique gift and event for our wedding. It was such a highlight… apart from the whole, you know, getting married part!”

If you’re thinking of trying it yourself, Lianne, who carried out the casting, offered a few invaluable tips: “Make sure you’re super prepared and that the bride and groom know exactly what they’re doing. Speak to the venue beforehand to make sure you’ve got access to water and electricity, and bring an electric whisk with you!”

What gifts do engaged couples really want?

What gifts do engaged couples really want?

anniversary-birthday-blue, what gifts do engaged couples really want

Your friends just got engaged. But don’t rush in with a bottle of champagne or some steadfast-and-pleasing houseplant, because you could be wasting your money.

One4all[1], the gift card created by the Post Office, recently conducted a survey on 1,000 adults in the UK, which aimed to discover what newly-engaged couples wanted most from their family and friends to mark their big news.

Some obvious favourites spring to mind – booze, houseware, wedding decorations. But the answer? But according to the results, soon-to-be-newlyweds would rather receive gift cards or money than trinkets for their home, drinkable treats or, to be frank, anything else.

Over half the participants surveyed revealed that they’d rather receive cash or a gift card, while couple experience days were the third most popular answer.

A personalised, homemade or bespoke present (including artwork and photo gifts) followed, with champagne coming fifth.

With the cost of weddings as high as ever, it’s no surprise that money is deemed the most useful gesture. From dresses and catering to the venue and beyond – including the honeymoon – financial contributions can form a much-needed head start for a big day budget.

But while this may be the case for the engagement gift, what should you do for the wedding? If you need some gift ideas for food lovers[2] or want advice on wedding gift [3]lists in general, we’ve got you covered.

The Post Office gift card can be customised according to occasion and is valid across more than 50,000 UK outlets.
