The Best Hair Masks for 2019

Perfect wedding day hair doesn’t just happen upon you. Your locks require serious attention in the lead-up to your big day and that means tonnes of hydration. We’ve rounded up the best hair masks to use at home to keep your hair in mint condition.

The Best Hair Masks for 2019

At least six months before your wedding you need to begin your mission to achieve flawless wedding locks. Whilst a good hair stylist on the day can work wonders, some care prior to this can restore your locks to optimum condition.

“I suggest starting the Ultra Nourishing masque treatment at least six months before your wedding day. It is crucial to maintain the condition of your hair, so when you see signs of improvement, gradually go down to perhaps once every two weeks.” Says Paul Windle, MD and Founder of Windle & Moodie.

“If your hair isn’t too damaged, but a just needs a little TLC, start three months before your wedding. Hair that is already strong and healthy would only need to undergo a treatment a couple of days before the big day.”

The emergency hair masks

So you realise your wedding is mere months away and you’ve left your hair to split and dry out, negligently. Queue a rushed hair chop and intense hair treatment to pump some life back into it.

Windle & Moodie Ultra Nourishing Masque, £34[1]

The final, indulgent step in a three-step treatment you can do at home or in the Windle and Moodie salon. The rich and luxurious cream coats the hair shaft and over the space of 15 minutes works to intensely hydrate. A catalyst in the journey to healthy hair.

The best hydrating hair masks

Kerastase Elixer Ultime, £25[2]

A better option for coarse, thick hair in need of more life. It’s heavy and indulgent and only a five-minute mask, so ideal for the time-constrained among us. Formulated with four hydrating oils (Maize, Pracaxi, Camellia and Argan) it’s a bit too much for fine hair. For coarse hair, use bi-weekly and for fine hair, we’d suggest once every few weeks.

The best restorative hair masks

Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask, £32.85[3]

Cult haircare brand Moroccanoil once again delivers a hair saviour. We found the mask helped slick down dry and lacklustre ends and soften our coarse tresses after one use.

Sachajuan Hair Repair, £19.55[4]

Sachajuan’s hair repair noticeably improved shine on our lacklustre air and we noticed it reduced frizz. It’s not as thick as some of the other masks we tried so it’s not as impactful on colour-treated hair. We couldn’t get enough of the smell though.

Hello Jo pack of 3, £6 [6]

Hello Jo works to restore and revive the ends of your hair to prevent breakage. A cocktail of a multitude of oils (argan, olive, moringa) it adds a natural slip and suppleness to convince you you’ve done it the world of good.

Tigi Bed Head Urban Anti+dotes mask, £9.54[7]

One that smells like summer even after you’ve dried your hair. We noticed it minimized frizz and smoothed frazzled ends. We loved the light consistency (it’s like a normal conditioner), plus, it’s great for all hair types.

The everyday hair mask

We understand that not everyone washes and conditions their hair daily. When we say everyday mask, we really mean in place of your normal conditioner.

Redken All Soft Mega Megasoft, £18[9]

One for coarser hair, Redken’s Megasoft is nourishing without a greasy finish. Work a 50p sized dollop through your hair from roots to tip and leave it for five minutes. TIt’s a great everyday mask for fine and coarse hair.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist[11], RRP £4.99 at Boots[12]

The everyday hair mask. The time it takes you to wash all your other bits, this mask will have worked it’s magic. Gentle on the scalp and bursting with fragrance, it also doesn’t cost the earth.

Charles Worthington Grow Strong, £6.74[13]

When you’ve not really got the time, five minutes or otherwise, to hang around for a hair mask to work its magic. Queue Charles Worthington’s Grow Strong treatment. It’s a leave-in treatment that requires no rinsing. We found it left our tresses silky-soft and smelling fresh throughout the day. We were impressed it didn’t leave finer hair greasy or heavy.

Editor’s Voices: I Tried Stella McCartney’s Wedding Collection and was Surprisingly Underwhelmed

Easily my favourite of Meghan Markle’s two wedding dresses, I was eager to try Stella McCartney’s wedding collection. Spoiler: for the fans of the new Duchess, there’s a Meghan-style dress sure to win you over.

Stella McCartney store Bond Street e-Editor's Voices: I Tried Stella McCartney's Wedding Collection and was Surprisingly Underwhelmed

I Tried Stella McCartney’s Wedding Collection and was Surprisingly Underwhelmed

Understandably, trying to get an appointment was tricky. It took three goes, but that’s to be expected with such a household name.

When I reached the fashion house on Old Bond Street, I was half expecting there to be a bridal suite, of sorts. However, the bridal range is an extension of her other collections so it sits among the rest of this season’s collection on the second floor.

If you have been to try on wedding dresses, you’ll appreciate it’s quite a personal experience. It’s usually you and either your mother and/or bridesmaids who accompany you. Bridal boutiques often go out of their way to make the wedding dress shopping a special experience, as it’s not likely to be an occurring thing. You’ll likely be offered a glass of bubbly and quizzed about your forthcoming nuptials, but not here.

I visited the flagship Stella McCartney store, which was thankfully quiet, and set over three floors.

Trying on the Dresses

If you’ve been to the Stella McCartney store on Bond Street you will know how lovely it is. The brand prides itself in its sustainability both in its products and its bricks and mortar stores. The staff are friendly and welcoming, though not too hands-on with the bridal collection.

Upon my arrival, I was shown to the rail of dresses on the second floor and shown to the changing room. I was then left to shimmy my way in and out of the dresses myself. Tricky.

Anyone above a size 10 won’t have much luck getting into one of the dresses in store, which only range from 6-10. Having squeezed my size 10 frame into some and not others, I had to admit defeat. The dresses are beautiful but it was nearing on impossible to get a feel for what they would really look like. In my experience, the range wasn’t too accommodating of curves. To have only sizes between 6 and 10 was somewhat restrictive and disappointing.

There was also a limited stock available. Sadly, the suit and the lace jumpsuit weren’t in-store, both of which I was keen to try. What’s more, I was given black shoes from the floor to try on with the dresses, which didn’t quite go. Though they were gorgeous and I’d never say no any other time.

The Result

All in all, it didn’t quite feel like a real bridal collection, (I noticed the same dresses in red on another rail). The experience was somewhat underwhelming and quite far removed from your typical wedding dress shopping experience.

However, to pay the dresses their dues, they were lovely. Simplistic and elegant with an all-sequin number for someone looking for something completely different. Fans of the Duchess will be delighted to know there is a Meghan Markle-esque dress, which I’m told is really popular- unsurprisingly.

It wasn’t a successful venture this time so it’s back to the bridal boutiques for me.

Pieces from Stella McCartney’s wedding collection start from £675 and go into the £5,000s.

Scented Weddings: Everything you Need to Know About this 2019 Trend

Play on not just the emotions of your guests, but their senses too by creating the perfect scented wedding sure to spark nostalgia in years to come.

place setting with candles for scented weddings

Scented Weddings: Everything You Need to Know

Scented weddings are growing in popularity but if you’re not too sure what they are, this article is your bible to everything you need to know. It’s when you use candles or diffusers to scent your wedding, alongside your flower displays. Scents can trigger memories and nostalgia, so scented weddings are a nice touch. Kate Middleton scented her wedding with Jo Malone London Orange Blossom, apparently.

Top tips:

  • Always err on the side of caution. Subtlety is better than potency. If you have scented candles, have them dotted around the edges of the room and keep the unscented candles on the tables. You’ll have no-doubt spent a fortune on flowers so you’ll want to be able to smell them and the warm glow from the unscented candles will create a nice ambience.
  • Stick to one fragrance per room. If you have a few scents that compliment your flower arrangements, use different ones in different areas or rooms. This way people will be able to pick up on the subtle nuances.
  • Make sure your venue allows open flames, otherwise you’ll need to look at reed diffusers (which we have also included in this roundup).
  • Choose your wedding flowers first, before your additional scents and ask your florist for advice on pairing your scents.

Celebrity florist, Jonathan Moseley[1], has shared his advice and insight on pairing scents for your wedding.

“A bridal bouquet without fragrance is like a meal without any taste. Fragrance and flowers are inextricably linked.” He tells us

“Like the refined blending of tastes, scented flowers need the fragrant diva but then also a supporting cast of more delicate subtle fragrant overtones.”

Achieving the Perfect Scented Wedding

“Flowers should always be the starting point as they are a huge part of the visual impact of the wedding day.” Says Jonathan,

“The intrinsic natural beauty and fragrance that fresh, seasonal flowers possess can easily be accentuated by candles, reed diffusers or room sprays that compliment or accentuate the natural smell of the flowers.”

Which Smells with Which Flowers?

Roses

White roses represent humility, innocence and true love. They are one of, if not the most popular wedding flower for obvious reasons- they look and smell amazing.

We said:

The White Pomegranate candle has a really delicate and subtle scent, which is the perfect accompaniment for roses. combined they create a sweet and delicate scent, great for indoor weddings.

Gypsophila

Also known as ‘Baby’s Breath’, Gypsophilia hasn’t got the best reputation on the smell front, but it does look beautiful. Whether paired with other flowers in a bouquet or as a standalone bunch, they are incredibly popular for weddings and very budget-friendly.

We say:

You couldn’t find a more perfect wedding diffuser than these from Eternal Blooms with preserved roses. The deep and musky scent of the oud and patchouli is warming against the sweet smell of Persian roses. This scent is great for covering up the smell of baby’s breath/ gypsophila.

Top Tips for Beautiful Wedding Flowers

Choosing wedding flowers can be a bit of a minefield but it needn’t be, simply enlist the help of a reputable florist to bring your ideas to life. From the bridal bouquet to buttonholes and blooms for the venue, flowers are a wonderful way to enhance the visual impact of a wedding. Take note of these tips for beautiful wedding flowers so you’re ready to impress your florist.

Top Tips for Beautiful Wedding Flowers

It’s easy to get swept up in the world of Pinterest and Instagram for wedding flower inspiration, but the costs can quickly spiral. Start with your vision, and scale back to save costs where you can. See more below.

Florist, Elizabeth Marsh, shared her insight on floral trends for brides-to-be:

“With trends towards bronze and copper tones, there is a definite move away from silver. Rose gold and brass hues are also popular. We’re seeing more use of succulents and unusual plants and foliage, which keeps costs down.

“Brides and grooms are also taking more interest in the visual impact of their reception tables, theming tableware with floral centrepieces. The power of the flower is now more important than ever

How to maximise your budget and still have great wedding flowers:

  • Ingenuity in design – it is possible to break flowers down to the individual florets and place them nonchalantly to decorate a dining table, without blowing your budget. Branches and other sculptural elements that can be re-used, reducing the cost passed on to the customer.
  • Less is often more – Displays that include fewer flowers, often use them more intensely so that the impact is created by different means than a full arrangement containing multiple blooms. Filling every corner or available surface with flowers can be overkill. When this happens, the eye becomes overwhelmed and the brain can no longer take in the vision. The result is that the floral arrangement is not only expensive, but the impact of the flowers is actually reduced.
  • Seasonal Blooms – look for flowers in season, avoiding expensive transportation costs from far-flung corners of the world. There are likely to be very many seasonal options in your chosen colours.
  • A trend towards a simpler era – there is a certain charming naivety about some of the less expensive flowers. These generally tend towards the field flowers, daisies and grasses, tall wispy and romantic, which are quite on trend for weddings.

Thank you to Elizabeth Marsh Floral Designs[1] for the insight on this article.

Whilst a balloon arch is the dream, it’s not always easily achievable on your own. But that’s not to say you should give up on balloons. Why not create a simple, graduated balloon line with varied lengths of fish wire held down by balloon weights?

If you’re having a dinner party, why not tie a balloon to each chair in keeping with the colour scheme?
