Everything You Need To Know About Calculating An Auspicious Wedding Date

Here’s everything you need to know about auspicious dates, from why you need them to what you need to prepare for them and beyond.

Calculating an auspicious date for joyous events that will impact your future such as weddings or moving into a new home is a tradition well rooted not only in the Chinese culture, but in many other cultures worldwide as well. Tradition and superstition aside, the act of calculating an auspicious date simply boils down to one objective – to start your new beginning, be it a marriage or a new home, on a favourable day for both you and your partner for a smooth sailing future ahead.

Now, I know that not everyone looks at this in such a matter-of-fact manner. There are those who believe in the effectiveness of calculating an auspicious date for their wedding or new home while non-believers brush it off as mere superstition. Then, there are individuals like me who sit on the fence and choose to go with the flow. After all, if it is supposed to benefit me and it makes everyone in the family happy, then there’s no harm in seeking for an auspicious date.

To help you decide if you would like to approach an expert for an auspicious date for your wedding or moving into a new home, we speak to two renowned fengshui masters, Master David Tong from Chinese Metaphysics Global Consulting, and the team of experts at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy, on why you should seek out an auspicious date, what considerations you need to take into account when calculating an auspicious date and more.

Auspicious Date – Is It a Necessity?

Michelle and Sean’s Romantic Floral Wedding at Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa by Annabel Law Productions

An auspicious date for weddings, a new home or other joyous events refers to a good or lucky day to get married, move into a new home or carry out joyous celebrations. “Date selection for joyous occasions such as weddings, house-moving and business transactions is important because by doing the right thing at the right time, it creates the potential for success,” the experts at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy explains.

“An auspicious wedding date will help ensure that things flow more smoothly on the wedding day, as well as form a good start for the marriage,” Master David Tong reveals. “For a new home, a good move-in date will help usher in good luck for the occupants and minimise the impact of a bad Feng Shui house.”

How Is An Auspicious Date Calculated?

Letty and Benjamin’s Incredible Myanmar Pre-Wedding and Stylish Wedding by Super Panda Presents

Typically, a Feng Shui master would calculate an auspicious date for your wedding or moving into a new home based on your birth dates and time of birth to pick a favourable day for you and your partner. Alternatively, he may also arrive at an auspicious date for you based on your zodiac signs. Some Feng Shui masters will even ask for your parents’ zodiac signs to ensure that the selected auspicious date is favourable for both sides.

“Many couples choose to consult the Chinese Almanac (Tong Shu) when selecting an auspicious date. But the dates recommended by the Tong Shu is only meant for general usage,” the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy reveals. “The selected auspicious date should be personalised according to the couple’s birth information and have specific auspicious stars shining for that specific activity such as a wedding or moving house ceremony. For weddings, especially, we also take into account the couple’s parents’ zodiac signs during our calculation to ensure that there are no clashes with the couple’s immediate family members to increase the blessings bestowed upon the couple.”

What Do I Need to Prepare Before A Meeting With a Feng Shui Master?

Tina and Nick’s Peach and Gold Marquee Wedding with Giant Paper Flowers by Felicia Quah from AndroidsinBoots

If you’ve decided to seek out a Feng Shui master to calculate an auspicious date for your wedding or moving into a new home, look through our list of 12 Feng Shui masters in Singapore and reach out to one whom you feel comfortable with.

Do note that different Feng Shui masters handle enquiries differently. Some Feng Shui masters, like Master David Tong, only require a meet-up with the couple if they are seeking for an auspicious date for moving into a new home. “Aside from the occupants’ details and addresses, I will require a meet-up at their new home so that I can measure the house direction to derive the dates.”

“For wedding dates, couples can email me their birth dates and time of birth, both parents’ animal zodiac signs, as well as the period they want to hold their wedding,” Master David Tong says. “After which, we will meet and I’ll go through the explanation of the wedding dates report, as well as all the Chinese Wedding Customs.”

Other Feng Shui masters may prefer a face-to-face appointment right from the start to gather the necessary information, like the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy.

Can An Auspicious Date Be Calculated Without Our or Our Parents’ Zodiac Signs or Birth Dates?

Geraldine and Kenny’s Pinterest-Worthy White and Green Wedding at The Chapel @ Imaginarium by Andri Tei Photography

Most Feng Shui masters would require your birth dates and zodiac signs for an accurate calculation of an auspicious date for your wedding or house moving. For parents, most would only require their zodiac signs for the calculation.

“A good wedding date should not clash with the six important people – the bride and groom, and their parents – especially if they are attending the wedding,” the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy stresses. “Which is why the couple’s birth dates and their zodiac signs, as well as their parents’ zodiac signs are required for the most accurate and right auspicious date.”

“Although an auspicious date can still be calculated without the couple’s birth dates by using the Tong Shu, it may not accurately be a favourable date for them without factoring in their birth dates as calculation by the Tong Shu is a very generic method meant for mass consumption,” Master David Tong points out.

Who Needs To Be Present During An Appointment With a Feng Shui Master?

Amelia and Benedict’s Intimate Colonial-themed Wedding at Goodwood Park Hotel by Smittenpixels Photography

If you are seeking for an auspicious date for your wedding, it is best to have both you and your partner present during an appointment with a Feng Shui master. “When calculating an auspicious move-in date for a new home, only one owner of the new house needs to be present,” Master David Tong advises.

How Long Does It Take To Calculate An Auspicious Date?

Joyce and Melvin’s Intimate and Elegant Wedding at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore by Pixioo Photography

There is no hard and fast rule on how long it takes to calculate an auspicious date. It all depends on the criteria set by you. “The lesser restrictions given by the couple, the easier and faster it is for our master to calculate and recommend the best date for their wedding or moving into a new home,” the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy explains.

Before you approach a Feng Shui master for an auspicious date, do take into consideration when you would like to have your wedding. Since most couples start planning their wedding a year or two ahead of time, it would ideal for you to contact a Feng Shui master within that time frame for an auspicious date to increase their chances of securing a venue that you want. You should also take into consideration the time required by the Feng Shui master to generate an auspicious date.

Wedding and Home Feng Shui Taboos – Which Ones Should I Follow?

Cheryl Wee and Roy Fong’s Exquisite, Whimsical Wedding at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia‎ Singapore by Trouvé Photography

In the same way that Chinese weddings are steeped in tradition passed down from our ancestors, it is also surrounded by a long list of wedding taboos couples are expected to abide by to avoid incurring any bad luck or negative impact on their relationship and marriage.

“According to Chinese superstition, you are not allowed to attend another solemnisation, wedding, funeral or baby full month celebration 100 days before and after your wedding,” Master David Tong says. “In doing so, the couple will get bad luck for their own marriage.”

Another well-known wedding taboo couples should pay attention to involves the matrimonial bed after it has been set up in the An Chuang (安床) ceremony. “After the matrimonial bed has been “installed”, it should not be tampered with, even by the couple’s family, before the couple sleeps on it on the wedding day,” the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy warns. “If someone else sits or sleeps on the bed before the couple, they will not be able to get the blessings.”

“Other wedding taboos include not getting married in the same lunar year as your siblings or your relationship with them will turn sour in the future after marriage, and not letting the fire on the Dragon and Phoenix candles be extinguished by the wind as it symbolises a bad omen to the marriage,” Master David Tong lists out.

For new home owners, one of the more popular home Feng Shui taboos you may have heard is that it is considered inauspicious to start renovations or move in during the seventh lunar month period, otherwise known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. “Couples may also not want to hang their wedding portrait at the head of the matrimonial bed as it is believed that doing so will lead to arguments and disharmony,” Master David Tong advises.

Jillian and Elroy’s Warm Church Wedding and Intimate Neon Pigeon Wedding Dinner by Xinning from alone – together

However, not all wedding or home Feng Shui taboos have truth in them, like the one on not wearing a pre-owned or secondhand wedding gown. “It is okay to wear a pre-owned or secondhand wedding gown as long as you feel that it is the piece for you,” the team at Yuan Zhong Siu Feng Shui Consultancy reassures. “After all, most brides choose to rent their gowns these days, which makes the gown they wear pre-owned anyway.”

“Also, some elders believe that the first and sixth lunar months are bad for marriage as it signifies a start with no end (有头没尾), and some even think that the even months are more auspicious for weddings,” Master David Tong reveals. “But, there is no logic in these beliefs. Every couple would have to marry in the 12th lunar month, which signifies togetherness (团团圆圆), or only during even months if that were the case.”

“When it comes to home Feng Shui, there is a popular myth that says that if the main door faces the windows directly, all the wealth Qi will leak out, and to prevent that from happening, you’ll have to place a divider or partition in front of the door to block the Qi from escaping through the windows,” Master David Tong explains. “But, if you think about it, the main door is like your mouth on the face. Building a partition right in front of it is similar to sealing your mouth with a tape. You will end up suffocating instead!”

There is no right or wrong when it comes to whether you should or should not seek out a Feng Shui master to calculate an auspicious date for your wedding or moving into a new home. At the end of the day, it boils down to you and your partner’s comfort level. Alternatively, you may consult our auspicious dates calendar for a brief look at the favourable dates for your wedding, Guo Da Li and An Chuang ceremonies, and even the start renovation and moving in dates for your new home.

15 Wedding Live Band Providers in Singapore to Bring Your Wedding Soundtrack to Life

A wedding live band uplifts the tone of your wedding. Whether you’re after smooth, romantic jazz vocals or elegant strings, this list of live wedding bands in Singapore will help you find your sound!

Hoping to lift the atmosphere at your wedding? Consider hiring a wedding live band to serenade your guests. Whether you’re hoping for a fun party where your guests let loose and dance, or a romantic and elegant ceremony that will move them to tears, great live music will set the mood.

There are a few things to think about before locking down a live band. First, talk to your partner about the kind of tone you want to set for your wedding. A string quartet would add elegance and class, while current pop numbers can energise a crowd and turn your wedding into a party. You can opt for instrumental bands so that guests can focus on their conversation, or choose vocalists to entertain them.

Know your budget too. A wedding live band typically plays your march-in songs and two 45-minute sets during your celebration, although you can certainly request for a package that suits your wedding. A two-piece band costs significantly less than a big brass band with 12 members, so you want to take into consideration the number of musicians and vocalists you hire. Most bands require you to hire sound systems as well, so do ask about other costs.

To help you find the perfect soundtrack to your celebration, here’s a list of 15 live wedding band providers in Singapore. Most of them have a large network of vocalists, musicians, and bands that perform a variety of genres—from Top 40’s to Korean Pop to Evergreens—so you can find one that fits your style!

12 Feng Shui Masters in Singapore for Auspicious Wedding Dates

Looking for a feng shui master in Singapore? These feng shui consultancies offer auspicious wedding date selection services, ba zi compatibility analyses, and guidance on traditional customs.

Couples who believe in feng shui will want to seek the advice of a feng shui master to select auspicious wedding dates and times. While general auspicious dates are calculated based on Tong Shu, Feng shui masters analyse your ba zi and your parents’ birth dates to ensure the selected date does not clash with anyone.

You’ll probably be asked for your full names, your birth dates and times, your parents’ birth dates and animal zodiac signs, whereupon your feng shui master will personalise a date selection for your wedding. Wedding date selection fees range from $150 onwards. Couples who are looking for a feng shui master will find this list handy.

1. Chinese Metaphysics Global Consulting by Master David Tong

Founder and Principal Consultant of CMG Consulting, a multiple-award-winning Feng Shui consultancy, Master David Tong has been featured in major media networks for his knowledge of feng shui. A popular choice among couples in Singapore, Master David Tong’s auspicious wedding dates package is calculated with the couple’s ba zi, and includes a selection of ROM date and time, selection of customary wedding date, a report listing all the auspicious dates and timings you can use for your wedding, and a guide on the various traditions. It also includes a selection for guo da li date and time, selection for bridal bed installation, and a complimentary re-selection of wedding dates in the event that your venue is fully booked.

Into the Woods: A Deep Forest Wedding Styled Shoot at Andaz Singapore

In our latest wedding styled shoot at 665°F Steakhouse, we conjure the rich and mysterious hues of the forest into the heart of the city.

In September, we embarked on yet another inspiring styled shoot with a talented team of creatives from John Lim Photography, Glittering Carousel, PHKA, Florals Actually, GG Fresh Flowers, In The Brick Yard, Paper Pressed, CS21 Design Pte Ltd, Angie Curtains , Lovera Collections and MJ Rental Svc at one of Singapore’s trendiest wedding destinations, Andaz Singapore.

Situated in a brand new two-tower complex called DUO Singapore in Bugis, with a direct access to the Downtown Line and East-West Line, and within walking distance to food and shopping in the area, Andaz Singapore is the first Andaz hotel by the Hyatt Hotels Corporation to open in Southeast Asia, and one of the newest and trendiest hotels for one-of-a-kind weddings in the city.

When we visited Andaz Singapore some time last year, we were awed by its beautiful and warm interiors. Contemporary and cosy with a touch of modern vintage and a fun, local vibe, the hotel’s elegant wood furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows and stunning wedding venues meant we had to return for a styled shoot someday. And return we did! While their ballrooms, The Glasshouse and Garden Studio, were absolute beauties, we turned our attention to a more intimate space that was equally as charming for weddings – 665°F Steakhouse on Level 38.

Named after the temperature of the Pira oven and grill which sits in the heart of the show kitchen, 665°F Steakhouse is a cosy dining experience that seats up to 44 guests comfortably, featuring charismatic globe light fixtures, dramatic interiors with dark, masculine furnishings, and a magnificent view of the cityscape through its floor-to-ceiling windows.

To complement the deep hues of walnut, burgundy and copper in the restaurant, our wedding stylist, Glittering Carousel, and their exclusive partner and co-stylist, Bangkok-based design studio PHKA, dreamed up a luscious deep forest vision that included colors such as dark green and mahogany, and fruits such as berries and deep, red apples to create a unique mood and tone for this styled shoot.

“We love incorporating different elements to create surprises, and when we first came across PHKA, we fell in love with their style and designs at first sight,” Shu Min, artisan florist and one half of the talented duo behind Glittering Carousel elaborates. “This styled shoot offered us the perfect opportunity to showcase our exclusive partnership with PHKA and their unique flair in architectural designing in weddings, to show couples how they can incorporate architectural design into their big day for something truly one-of-a-kind.”

“To complement the sleek, modern exteriors and interiors of Andaz Singapore and 665°F Steakhouse, we included repetitive and sleek layers of metal structures that both contrast and accentuate the wild look of the florals Cheryl from Florals Actually put together,” Si Ling, co-founder of Glittering Carousel, explains. “We worked with the good people at CS21 Design Pte Ltd, a decade-old carpentry firm that recently expanded into interior design, to customise the metal structures for the solemnisation area at the picturesque outdoor garden outside the Garden Studio and restaurant’s foyer space.

To complete the vision Glittering Carousel and PHKA had for the solemnisation set-up, the metal structures were set against the iconic, Gothic-looking Parkview Square instead of the sleek, honeycomb exterior of DUO Singapore, and complemented with black Tiffany chairs from MJ Rental Svc. Set upon a luxurious, deep emerald green velvet table linen, specially customised by Angie Curtains, a second generation curtains and blinds company that specialise in producing made-to-measure curtains, pelmets, cushion covers and blinds, was In The Brick Yard’s beautiful three tier wedding cake with modern, abstract splashes and romantic florals.

In the cosy space of 665°F Steakhouse, Si Ling and Shu Min dressed up an intimate sweetheart table in the main dining room of the restaurant. Set along a long, cushioned bench and three beautiful long panel mirrors, artful floral centerpieces, masterfully put together by Cheryl, sit on either ends of the table, accompanied by candles in deep burgundy, specially customised for the shoot.

Deep red apples of various sizes lay charmingly strewn over the table and luxurious velvet table linen, complementing the wild look of the florals while providing an interesting contrast to the sleek, modern tableware from Andaz Singapore and Lovera Collections, and the beautifully contemporary wedding stationery by Paper Pressed.

The restaurant’s private dining room with its gorgeous full length windows, ornate light chandelier and luxurious wood furnishings offered the perfect space for an elegant tablescape. Ideal for an intimate party of 12 guests, the room offers just the right amount of privacy for an intimate celebration. Or, with the charming light chandelier set right above the gorgeous walnut table in the middle of the room, the room is also a splendid accompaniment to a dessert table or wedding cake.

“For this styled shoot, we worked with a mix of first and second generation vendors to create the look that we were after, mainly Angie Curtains, CS21 Design Pte Ltd and GG Fresh Flowers” Shu Min explains. “The flowers Cheryl used were kindly supplied by GG Fresh Flowers, a second generation, premier wholesale distributor of fresh cut flowers with nearly 40 years of experience in supplying a wide variety of fresh blooms all over Singapore.”

“We feel that there is a synergy from incorporating both first and second generation vendors,” Shu Min continues. “Second generation vendors are able to tap on the years of experience from those before them and value-add to the business with their creativity and experimental spirit.”

Last but not least, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to style the spacious foyer outside the restaurant, especially the captivating circular light chandelier right at the doorstep. Perfect as either a reception or photo area, Glittering Carousel and PHKA dreamed up a unique way for couples to showcase their wedding photos. Set under the lights, a second metal structure, charmingly entwined with wild vines and elegant white blooms, provides the perfect frame for a photo gallery.

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR TEAM OF CREATIVES!

We would like to thank all creatives who collaborated with us on this styled shoot at Andaz Singapore! It was a dream come true to work with you all and we had lots of fun – we hope you did too! Last but not least, thank you Andaz Singapore for inviting and providing us with such a modern and cosy space to work with!

Andaz Singapore is located at 5 Fraser St, Singapore (189354).

In 2019, more and more couples will be leaning towards bespoke pieces for their engagement rings and wedding bands. “We expect wedding band trends to emerge on a higher level of customisation with mounted gemstones or birthstones,” Amanda Koo from eClarity shares. “Couples will be more persistent about having wedding bands that symbolise their love in a unique and personalised way.”

The gradual popularity of bespoke wedding rings is no surprise. In the same way that they wish to personalise their wedding day, couples are looking to customise their rings that reflect their personalities, love and story. “From the shape, texture, to each carefully encrusted stone, the wedding bands must completely encapsulate this unique connection between the couple,” Lucas Ruppli, Chief Designer at Furrer-Jacot adds.

Coloured Gemstones

No longer just the choice of alternative brides, coloured gemstones are slowly gaining popularity among mainstream brides. As more couples opt for a higher level of personalisation in their weddings and wedding rings, they are looking for more unique gemstones to adorn their rings other than the good old diamond for jewellery that is one-of-a-kind.

Different Cuts of Gemstones

For centuries, the round solitaire has been every couple’s choice of cut for their wedding bands. Today, couples are leaning towards unusual cuts of gemstones for their rings as they demand for greater personalisation and uniqueness for their once-in-a-lifetime. Brides who yearn for something unique yet not too different from the traditional round solitaire can opt for Pear or Oval cuts while those who are set on a one-of-a-kind ring can go for the uncommon but unique Emerald or Marquise cuts.

Smaller/Thinner Bands

This year, minimalism is coming out on tops, especially after Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in a beautiful, classic and minimalist wedding gown by Givenchy and attended her reception in an equally stunning dress by Stella McCartney. “Thinner wedding bands are gaining popularity these days because more couples wish to keep their wedding bands simple and minimalist,” Yu Xian, Brand Manager at Aspial-Lee Hwa Jewellery, observes.

So, it’s no wonder that couples are seeking to incorporate the minimalist trend into their wedding bands by opting for thinner or smaller bands. It also doesn’t hurt that thinner or smaller bands look more flattering on a bride’s slender fingers and might be easier to stack with her engagement ring.

Rose Gold Rings

While the rose gold wedding band trend is no newcomer, it is here to stay in 2019. “Rose gold wedding bands are increasingly and continuously popular as young couples find it more unique and contemporary,” a Soo Kee Jewellery representative shares. A refreshing departure from the usual traditional yellow gold or the more common white gold rings, rose gold bands are modern, elegant, feminine, different and extremely flattering for fair to medium skin brides. So, it’s not difficult to see why this trend is still going on strong.

Rings in Different or a Mix of Finishes and Metals

An eClarity Tale of Love With Diamonds and Wedding Rings

Can’t come to an agreement if your wedding bands should be glossy or matte, in rose or white gold? Well, you don’t have to anymore. Wedding bands with a different finish and mix metal and finish rings will be the rage in 2019.

Wedding bands with a different finish (think matte instead of glossy) offers couples the option of something different without being too out of the world, while mix metal or finish rings are great for those who cannot agree on one metal or finish. Unique, flexible and modern, this contemporary wedding band trend also signifies the coming together and unity of two individuals despite your differences – exactly what your marriage should stand for.

Complementary Bands

Gone are the days where your wedding band has to match your engagement ring or even your groom’s wedding band. In 2019, complementary wedding bands will be trending as brides place more emphasis on their wedding bands as a standalone piece of jewellery rather than a companion to their engagement ring or their partner’s wedding band. With a greater demand for customisation and personalisation, complementary bands offer brides the freedom to express their individuality into a ring that signifies a promise of lifelong love, happiness, companionship, loyalty and fidelity.

Now, grooms also get to benefit from this trend of complementary wedding bands too. You get to choose a ring that you like and would wear on a daily basis instead of being forced to wear a wedding band with a splay of diamonds that matches your bride’s. In the same way going for complementary bands offer her the freedom to decide what she wants and input her personality, grooms get to design a ring that belongs only to them as well, so its a win-win situation.

Classic Styles That Are Trending in 2018/19

Sometimes, old is gold, and these stunning classic styles are definitely still swaying couples’ hearts in 2019. “Trends may come and go, but a classic design will never go out of style,” Lucas Ruppli, Chief Designer at Furrer-Jacot explains. “Years later, it will still be an elegant and timeless statement of a couple’s love.”

Yellow Gold

Stand aside rose and white gold – yellow gold is making a comeback in 2019. “With more contemporary designs to choose from, more young couples are going for yellow gold because of its timeless and classic look,” Yu Xian, Brand Manager at Aspial-Lee Hwa Jewellery predicts.

“Easy to keep clean and does not dull easily, yellow gold is regaining popularity as its warm yellow gold tones gives it an enduring and high quality character that withstands the test of time,” Lucas Ruppli, Chief Designer at Furrer-Jacot adds. So, stay on trend and opt for yellow gold wedding bands instead!

Eternity Rings

Another wedding band trend that is no stranger to brides but is here to stay is the eternity rings. “Timeless and classic, eternity rings symbolise an eternal love,” Amanda explains. “The continuous array of diamonds on the band of an eternity ring is a perpetual expression of love in a never-ending circle.” Eternity rings are also really versatile as gifts. They can be worn as an engagement ring or wedding band, or given as an anniversary gift or a present for other milestones.

Milgrain Designs

With couples paying more attention to the design and feel of their wedding bands in 2018/19, milgrain designs are quickly gaining popularity due to its intricate details and unique heirloom look. “Each decorative design gives the piece a sense of intricacy, allowing the wearer to feel its texture,” Lucas Ruppli, Chief Designer at Furrer-Jacot elaborates. The degree of design, intricacy and craftsmanship needed to create a milgrain ring lends a sort of uniqueness and character to the ring that cannot be replicated, making it a perfect trend for once-in-a-lifetime wedding bands.

More Wedding Band Shopping Tips From The Experts

“Couples should attend non-obligatory talks by professionals to understand their needs better and learn about customising jewellery from how to tell the quality of gemstones to the different types of gold, finishes, broadness and ways to mount the stones,” Amanda shares.

“Plan ahead of time and create mood boards of your preferred style of ring if you are planning on customising your wedding bands,” Yu Xian, Brand Manager at Aspial-Lee Hwa Jewellery says. “Couples should also take into account their lifestyle before choosing their rings to ensure a comfortable fit. Last but not least, shop for your wedding bands together!”

“Give yourselves ample time to shop for your wedding bands, ideally three to four months before your big day so that you have sufficient time for customisation or ring alteration,” Soo Kee Jewellery’s representative advises. “Most importantly, always set a budget for your ring shopping so you don’t end up overspending beyond your means.”
