The best Black Friday 2018 deals, sales and offers

Black-Friday-2018-confessions-of-a-shopaholic

Black Friday – a.k.a, the biggest shopping event of the year – is inching closer, and as bargain hunters wait in anticipation of the huge discounts and sales set to be unleashed on the high street and online, here’s everything you need to know about the Black Friday deals 2018 and the best offers.

Yes, in case you’ve been living in the North Pole, these days waiting until Boxing Day to dive into the sales is a thing of the past. Check out all the best deals, sales and offers for Black Friday 2018 below…

When is Black Friday 2018?

Black Friday sales always take place the day after Thanksgiving in the US.

In 2017, Black Friday officially fell on 24 November, but this year, Black Friday falls on Friday 23 November 2018.

When is Cyber Monday 2018?

Black Friday 2018 deals will continue over Saturday and Sunday before Cyber Monday comes just three days later.

This year, Cyber Monday falls on Monday 26 November 2018, with some sales stretching across the entire four-day period before the slightly-milking-it ‘Bounce-Back Tuesday’ lands on 27 November for those who still have money in their bank accounts.

When do Black Friday Sales 2018 begin?

Black Friday is on Friday 23 November 2018, but most retailers will inevitably put offers live all week as the annual shindig takes over the whole month.

What should I buy on Black Friday 2018?

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year and has long been thought of as the commencement of the Christmas shopping period where you can buy anything at a discount from beauty products and clothes to toys and homeware.

But Black Friday is the best time of the year to buy anything tech related from TVs, and speaker systems to tablets and game consoles.

Big names that took part in 2017 include Amazon, Argos, John Lewis, Tesco, Currys PC World, GAME, Carphone Warehouse, M&S, Debenhams, ASOS and Very.

Expect a huge range of tech and gaming items including the retailer’s own-branded items like the Amazon Echo speaker and Amazon Fire tablet in the sales.

The high street chain is a great destination for shoppers looking for discounted toys, tech and electronics like laptops and TVs.

Debenhams will be offering a variety of huge discounts, starting Tuesday 20 November right through to Friday 30 November, with deals on fashion, homeware, electricals, beauty and fragrance.

John Lewis says Black Friday is “the perfect time to stock up on Christmas presents” and to help you along the way, the department store is promising even hotter black Friday deals for 2018 across appliances, TVs, computers and other gadgets.

With the closure of the Tesco Direct site, we predict that the majority of deals that the supermarket giant runs this year will be in store.

The high street giant will offer eager shoppers huge savings on tech gadgets and electrical items – watch out for discounts on top branded products like Fitbit activity trackers, Apple laptops and tablets as well as Dyson appliances.

The fashion brand will be offering 50% off selected styles until Thursday 22 November, followed by up to 70% off from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. You can also take advantage of 20% off everything at QuizMan from 20 to 26 November.

Wedding dresses under £1,000 for brides on a budget

If you’re a bride on a budget, these gorgeous (and cheap) wedding dresses from Kelsey Rose will have you looking like a million dollars on your wedding day all for under £1,000…

With the average UK wedding costing over £32,000, it helps to save money where you can – so getting your wedding dress a little bit cheaper is a good place to start.

There’s so many styles out there, with some designs costing an eye-watering amount of money for something you’re probably only going to wear once.

Which is exactly why we’re such fans of the dresses at London-based design studio Kelsey Rose[1].

Here are just some of our favourite styles from the label’s 2019 collection (all coming it at less than £1,000 each!)…

Illusion lace wedding dress (#18676)

Kelsey Rose wedding dress

A dress that tells a story. Crafted from divine soft crepe, this lace-shouldered dress is the definition of relaxed glamour.

The minimalist silhouette is enhanced by the scalloped illusion lace that shapes the V-neckline, flowing into the illusion back detail.

The sleek flared shape is kept strikingly simple in crepe for unforgettable style. Available in ivory and white.

Floral floor-skimming wedding dress (#80054)

Kelsey Rose wedding dress

Romance and confidence meet in this heavenly gown.

This T-length dress features embroidered lace with three-dimensional floral detailing for a look that is as dynamic as it is feminine.

The T-length silhouette is endlessly romantic, while the sweetheart bodice is enhanced with illusion V-neck lace layered over. Available in ivory.

Slinky lace wedding dress (#18703)

Kesley Rose wedding dress

Classic elegance meets luxurious detailing in this signature fit and flare shape.

This dress features beautiful long sleeves and illusion back detailing, with layered lace giving the illusion of a Bardot neckline with long sleeves.

In sumptuous crepe and lace, this dress combines texture with delicacy and lightness. Available in ivory and white.

Lace slip wedding dress with low back (#12610)

Kelsey Rose wedding dress

Crafted in corded lace with delicate skinny straps, this style is just as eye-catching from the back.

The low back is perfect for those looking to make a statement, while the all-over lace and slim straps keep this look simply chic. Perfect for a summer ceremony. Available in ivory.

Halterneck ballgown wedding dress (#12611)

Kesley Rose wedding dress

Luxurious and feminine, this dress was made for the woman who wants classic romance. This style fuses a classic silhouette with a breath-taking circular halter neck fit.

It flatters the bust and waist with a fitted pleated bodice and wide pleated waistband which falls to a dreamy full ballgown skirt in divine beaded satin.

The gown for the woman seeking something unique, timeless and unforgettable. Available in ivory and white.

How to make your wedding budget go further

Marquee wedding receptionCredit: albertpalmerphotography.com

No matter what your wedding budget, you can still have the day of your dreams – and the best bit, nobody will ever know. Here are our top tips to help those pennies go further…

Hire a wedding planner

This may seem like a luxury, but more and more brides are realising that having a wedding planner can be a huge help. As well as finding the best deals, they can also make sure that everything you’ve spent your money on gets used on the day. With varying degrees of service available, you can choose the one that’s best for you.

Do it yourself

The best weddings are often the most personal ones, so why not turn your hand to making things? You’ll find a whole host of crafts online, as well as pre-made kits to suit a colour scheme. Or how about making your bridesmaids’ posies? Many florists have workshops where you can learn how to create small arrangements. Leave your bouquet to the professionals though!

Choose a must-have

If you’ve always dreamed of arriving by helicopter, having a cocktail bar or a massive firework display, then make it happen. Choose one must-have item and do everything you can to have it, even if you have to cut back in other areas.

Sell, sell, sell

One girl’s trash is another’s treasure, so hunt through your attic, basement and garage, and box up any unwanted junk that you can sell at car-boot sales or on auction sites. You could be surprised by how much you make and it’ll make space for gifts, too.

Bag a bargain

Join your local Facebook buy and sell groups. Couples often sell off pieces from their wedding after it has happened – you could pick up candles, other décor items and even chair covers there. Alternatively, check out our online shop[1] to find affordable gifts ideas.

Use your friends

Whether it’s a talented relative making the cake, your best friend DJing or your neighbour chauffeuring you in their brand new Mercedes, make sure to ask your nearest and dearest to help you on the day.

Cut back on food

The reception is normally one of the most expensive parts of the wedding, but it’s also the place where you can cut back on your spending. Why not have a later ceremony so there is only one meal during the day? Serve your cake as the dessert or choose a theme that doesn’t involve a formal sit-down meal, like an English tea party with tea, jam and scones. You could even ask guests to bring homemade cakes for a Bake-Off style celebration.

Seek out newbies

Choose suppliers that are just starting out – you’ll find that they are often more competitively priced than long-established companies and still have great skills to offer. You may also find that new start-ups in the process of building their portfolio might make more of an effort for you as a result.

Go seasonal

If you choose seasonal flowers you could reduce your bill by hundreds of pounds – ask your florist what works best at what time of year, buying British if you can. Also, moving your ceremony flowers to your reception will enable you to use them twice.

DIY photo booth

Buy a Fujifilm Instax or a digital Polaroid and set up your own photo booth station with props. Ask your guests to leave you a snap with a note for the perfect guest book.

Go frugal on favours

Instead of shelling out on favours for each guest, why don’t you give one favour between each couple? Just make sure that it’s something shareable (obviously), like a jar of sweets.

Share the price

It can be worth asking your church or venue for contact details of other couples using the same location that week. You could share ideas, flowers or other decorations.

Get cashback

Take out a credit card with cashback to use for your wedding purchases. Some offer up to five per cent – and wedding bills soon mount up.

Spread the payments

Avoid paying for everything at once. Ask your suppliers if you can pay in instalments by direct debit – it will really help cashflow.

Don’t be extra

Don’t shell out on unnecessary extras. For instance, don’t provide a bread roll with your starter – guests will only fill up and not finish what is on their plate! Don’t fork out for dessert if you feel your cake served with fruit and cream will be just as good.

Venue with a difference

Look for independent venues. We heard from a bride who took over her favourite creperie and it cost just £1,400 for an unforgettable three-course meal. She hired a marquee for the dancing and it all worked really well. Think outside the box!

Negotiate packages

Don’t be scared to negotiate with your venue, especially if its set packages are not exactly what you’re after. For example, it might agree on a two-course meal to replace the three courses it offers, but add an extra glass of wine per head.

Lucky 13

If you’re not superstitious and not fixed on a mid-summer Saturday wedding, you may find that some dates are better priced than others – like weekdays or the 13th of a month. Venues and suppliers are also more likely to be available.

Marry abroad

Getting married overseas is great if you’re relaxed about who attends. Costs are usually lower because of the number of guests (though still be careful how many people you invite) and you get to start your honeymoon early. You may also find that your resort has some amazing wedding packages that UK venues just can’t beat.

26 Ways To Save Money In Style For Your Wedding

Do you need to rein in your spending but don’t want to compromise on your dream wedding[1]? Rachel Southwood shares 26 ways for you to save money in style…

26 ways to save money at your wedding without compromising on style - from catering and cars to favours and photobooths, you'll be back in budget in no timeflarefactor.com

Car share

Find out if any friends or family have a luxury car that you could borrow. Does your uncle have a vintage Rolls Royce tucked away in his garage? Does your cousin drive a flash Range Rover, or perhaps you have a few more unique options[3] up for grabs? Ask them if they would be happy to drive you to your wedding – they will probably be delighted to be asked and to perform those chauffeur duties.

Lucky 13

If you’re not superstitious and not fixed on a mid-summer Saturday wedding, you may find that some dates are better priced than others. Days of the week, too. Tuesday the 13th of June this year might be available and a good price, for example. We love the idea of Monday weddings, so that your guests can make a really long weekend of it. Venues[4] and suppliers are also more likely to be available if you choose an ‘obscure’ day or date.

Keep your eyes open

Join your local Facebook buy and sell groups. Couples often sell off pieces from their wedding after the event. You might pick up candles, décor items and even chair covers there. Alternatively check out the Wedding Ideas Shop[5] where you will find affordable gifts, key decor pieces and favour ideas!

Delay the dining

Having a late ceremony is a good way to save. If you get married at, say, 4pm, there is less time to fill with entertainment and food! Plus you can do something really lovely in the morning instead of waking early and it all being a bit of a rush.

Save on flowers

Choose seasonal flowers[6]. Your bill could be reduced by hundreds of pounds – talk to your florist about what works best at what time of year and buy British if you can. And if you have set your heart on one type of flower – peonies, for example – then you are going to have to book your wedding date accordingly, because flowers like this have a very short window of availability! Find out more about how you can save on your flowers here[7].

Choose suppliers who are just starting out – these will often be more competitively priced compared to long-established companies, but being new doesn’t mean that the skills aren’t there. You might also find more passion, commitment and creativity in a new business. These businesses will be building their portfolio and might make an extra effort for you as a result.

Marry overseas

Getting married overseas[8] is a great option if you’re relaxed about who attends… Costs will invariably be lower because of the number of guests (though be careful how many people you invite – you might be surprised how many say yes) and also you are already on honeymoon before you start! You may also find that the hotel or resort you choose have some amazing wedding packages that your favoured UK venues just can’t beat.

Venue with a difference

Look for independent, quirky venues[9]. A friend of mine took over her favourite creperie and it cost just £1,400 for a three-course meal that we will never forget! She hired a marquee for the dancing and it all worked really well. Thinking outside the box will always work wonders!

Negotiate packages

Don’t be scared to negotiate with your venue, especially if their set packages are not exactly what you’re after. For example, they might agree on a two-course meal to replace the three courses they have, but add an extra glass of wine per head. There is always room for negotiation in life…

Simply chic

Don’t go crazy on your centrepieces[10] – details like this won’t be remembered forever. Simple candelabra or candles in votives or Kilner jars filled with a few stems are more than enough to pretty-up your reception venue.

Sit down savings

The biggest cost of any wedding is feeding people. But do you really need to go all-out on a three-course wedding breakfast? Why not have a barbecue, hog roast or buffet?[11] I went to a wedding recently where they had lots of delicious canapés at the drinks reception and then a buffet much later. It worked really well and no-one was left feeling hungry.

Useful gifts

Ask close family to contribute to a specific part of your wedding, rather than buying you a present. Try patchworkit.com[12] and buyourhoneymoon.com[13] for ideas.

Be crafty!

DIY as many of the details as you can. You might surprise yourself, even if you didn’t think you had a creative bone in your body! You could make table centres, bunting, create sweetie tables, you could even bake cupcakes for a cupcake tower… Hand paint large letters for your dance floor, make photo booth props, favours. You could enlist the help of your bridesmaids in a craft-filled, wine-fuelled evening.

Minimal stationery

We don’t recommend that you scrimp on stationery too much, but perhaps order of service sheets and menus could be self printed and RSVP cards could be replaced with an email address. You could also make your table plan yourself.

Share the price

If you’re having a church ceremony, find out if there are any other weddings that day or even that week – you might be able to share some costs like church flowers. Similarly, if your venue is hosting other weddings that week, ask for contact details for the other couples – you might be able to share decorations or ideas.

Bring your own

If your day is to be laid back and informal, you could ask people you know to be good in the kitchen to bring a dish to create a yummy, relaxed buffet. People love to contribute to weddings; to feel part of it all. Honest!

Privilege cards

When you give notice at your registry office you should ask if they have a Privilege Card to give you. These will lead you to lots of local suppliers, many with great discounts to offer their cardholders.

Bake off

Why not ask your guests to compete in a wedding day bake off? Ask your guests to bring their signature cake along with them, then have your guests try them and vote for their favourite, which you could announce at the end of the night or let people know by email afterwards!

Guest photographers

We always recommend a professional photographer[14] – there is simply no substitute, and it’s not worth the risk, but now everyone with a smartphone can take photos too, you don’t want to miss any of them. Make sure they all use a hashtag that you create when posting to social media and ask your guests not to post too much on the day – you don’t want details leaking out without your approval!

Take-home ‘pay’

Instead of buying those who helped most on your big day a gift, why not ask them to take home a table centre or a floral arrangement each at the end of the night? Even a hand written card will be welcome.

Get cashback

Take out a credit card with cashback to use for your wedding purchases. Some offer up to 5% and those wedding bills soon mount up.

Spread payments

Don’t go paying everything out at once. Ask your suppliers if you can pay in instalments by direct debit, which will really help with that all-important cashflow.

No extras

Don’t fuss around with and shell out on unnecessary extras. For starters (excuse the pun!), don’t provide bread rolls with your starter – your guests will only fill up on carbs and not finish what is on their plate. Use wedding cake as a dessert – you could serve a lovely sponge cake with a fruit coulis, for example, which will save on one course.

DIY photobooth

Buy a Fuji Instax or a digital Polaroid camera and set up your own photo station with props (more on how to do it here[15]). Ask your guests to leave you a snap with a note for the perfect guest book, which you will enjoy for years to come.

Go frugal on favours

Instead of shelling out on favours for each guest, why don’t you give one favour between each couple? Just make sure that it’s something that is shareable (obviously)! Let us point you in the direction of sweets[16]

Doubling up

Enlist the help of one of your guests to transport your ceremony flowers to the reception so that they double up – that way you get two decorations for the price of one!

How to Make your Dream Wedding More Affordable

Your wedding is said to be the most important day of your life, but the build-up can also be a stressful time, especially financially. So, is there any way to make your big day more affordable?

There’s no doubt that hosting a wedding is expensive, but choosing the right way to pay for it could provide you with the wedding of your dreams, still within budget! In this guide, we plan to help you turn your wishes into reality by outlining ways in which you can fund your wedding day.

Look at the average spend

The best place to start is with a bit of research. Look into the average spend of a wedding in the UK or whichever destination you have chosen for your venue. It was reported in The Independent that more than half of married Brits[1] have expressed regret in terms of how much they ended up spending on their wedding day. Do not let this be the case for you – research is the best way to avoid post-martial regrets in the financial department.

bride and bouquet

According to recent statics, the average price of a wedding in the UK is currently at a record high of £27,161 – which is up 9.6% from 2016. The price takes into account venue hire, ceremony, caterers, photographers, dresses, suits and entertainment.

The average Asian wedding in the UK was said to cost up to £50,000[2], and Jewish weddings at an average of £55,000[3].

Get help from family or friends

It has long been the tradition for the bride’s family to pay for the wedding in full, however, in the 21st century, this has become a dying trend. In most cases, the cost is now up to the two people who are getting married. However, it is not uncommon for both parties’ parents to contribute towards the price of the wedding.

If you are lucky to be in a position where friends or family members can contribute or pay in whole for parts of your wedding, this can ease the strain when planning and booking all the elements of your big day.

Work out whether one side of the family is going to cover the costs, or whether both are paying for it. Is it going to be a combination of parental contributions and your own money, or are you solely going to rely on help from family?

Naturally, it will vary between traditions and customs. For Hindu weddings, the groom’s side pay for the reception and the bride’s side pay for the ceremony, and the remainder can be a combination approach.

In Jewish tradition, the groom’s parents are usually required to play for FLOP[4] (flowers, liquor, orchestra and photographer).

Looking at financial products

While many save up for their own or child’s wedding day, it is not uncommon to take out a personal loan to pay for a wedding. In fact, it is now something offered by many mainstream banks and lenders both in branch and online.

Taking out a loan can be an expensive way to pay for a wedding, but it can be an effective way of covering all the costs with the flexibility to repay in monthly instalments over time, making the price of the wedding easier to digest.

If you or your parents have a good credit rating, there are unsecured personal loans available for up to £25,000 or even £50,000 at interest rates below 10% per annum, which are repaid over five years. For those with a less than perfect credit score, there is also a guarantor loan[5] option, where you apply for the loan in your name but use a parent to ‘guarantee repayment’ and agree to repay if you cannot. There is no upfront cost to the parent involved – they are only called upon if payment is in arrears.

Get a new credit card

A credit card can be an affordable way to borrow the money needed to pay for your wedding, as long as you use the card sensibly.

0% purchase credit cards will let you spend without incurring interest on the purchases you make for a set number of months. This essentially means that you can spread the costs over time, which is classed as interest-free.

Be aware that you may only be eligible for this type of credit card if you have a good credit rating in place. Furthermore, do not rely on the credit card limit to be able to cover all wedding costs, and only use it for certain elements of the celebration.
