2. Live luxuriously in a treetop villa

Treetop Villa
The main building of Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa houses guestrooms and suites of 5 categories, each thoughtfully designed to provide you comfort and luxury during your stay. In the expansive resort grounds, you will find some of the most luxurious villas in the country and the largest on the island. The villas exude rich elegance and are surrounded by natural beauty.
The view from the Treetop Villa
We found the most breathtaking among the villas to be the Treetop Villa. Perched atop a hill amid lush greenery, the intimate villa overlooks sweeping sea views. The lower floor serves as the bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows. Each morning, your eyes will immediately open from a restful slumber to be welcomed with a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean. The upper floor has a spacious living area and a jacuzzi on the balcony for you to soak in the famed Boracay sunsets. This secluded sanctuary also comes with personalized butler service. The Treetop Villa is no doubt a perfect lovers’ getaway, and will most definitely make the morning after your wedding day feel incredibly surreal.
Premier Seaview Room
Rooms and villas at Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa enjoy a modern design but are accompanied with accents of indigenous materials such as the abaca weave rug and local capiz shells, that completes your tropical island experience.

3. Experience world-class & personalized service

The luxury Shangri-La brand, well-known for their luxurious and personalized service, blew us away on our visit. Their meticulous approach to service started the minute we arrived at the airport. As the only five-star international resort on the island, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa has a distinct arrival experience that is unparalleled. We were welcomed at the airport with their exclusive welcome lounge in Caticlan. Our luggage was taken care of as we were chauffeured to a private speedboat that whisked us away to the gorgeous resort. En-route, we were given a tour of the island. For your wedding, your guests will most certainly feel pampered to receive this warm, inviting and exclusive welcome. 4. Breathtaking vistas for unique photo shoots

Evening Sunsets at the Solana Cabanas
Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa has numerous idyllic, scenic spots not only to celebrate romance but also serves as stunning backdrops for your photo shoot. The entire resort spans across 12 hectares of beach, lush greenery and resort, with almost every corner presenting a photo opportunity. Be sure to check out the sunset backdrop at the clifftop bar, Solana and the treetop hideout, Rima. You are bound to create incredible photos in those areas.

5. Unforgettable dining experiences

Sirena Restaurant
Just when we thought our trip could not be any more luxurious, we were in for more surprises. The elevated dining experiences at Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa blew us away (again). Sirena, their cliff-top seafood restaurant gave us a carefree setting for savory meals, with unending ocean views. Alongside the pool at Cielo is where island feasting happens. Pasta and pizzas are paired alongside refreshing cocktails at this quaint spot.
Rima Restaurant
Rima – Tucked away in the tree-tops, is the perfect spot for a romantic and intimate dinner, and no doubt our favourite. Culinary masterpieces served up with excellent wines is what you can expect here. Do try the 4-course degustation menu. You will open the evening with a scoop of delicious potato mousse for amuse bouche. Savour the evening as you sip on sparkling wine while delighting in a sweeping panorama of the sea, before indulging in the main course: a 16-hour slow-cooked suckling pig with red cabbage, shallots, mustard demi-glace. Dreamy dining experiences do not stop at Rima. You can arrange for private dinners on the beach, at the Sea Pavilion or even in the comforts of your own villa. At Vintana, alongside with a huge variety of world cuisines lined up in a buffet spread you can also opt out to dine on the section of the restaurant that is outdoors for an alfresco dining experience. Do be wary of the tempting pastry section, for these sumptuous delights added a couple inches to our waistlines! But then again, you do not have to worry about keeping active, for the resort has a daily activity calendar with pilates, garden tai chi, aqua workout, kayaking, dragon boating, Zumba and many more.

6. Unwind & relax at this tropical island paradise

When it comes to relaxing, Alon bar, located between the resort’s free-form swimming pool and the beach has great island vibes. Lounge the day away with a refreshing tropical drink in total relaxation. For winding down the evenings, head over to Solana, where fun cocktails and a tapas-inspired menu will get your taste buds excited. Grab drinks around the fire pit, or lounge in one of the cabanas as you soak in the mesmerizing sunset view.

6. Pamper yourselves at Chi, The Spa

When at Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa, your trip is not complete without a visit to CHI, The Spa. Drawing inspirations from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, this is a place that promotes personal peace, enchantment, and well-being. Needless to say, that is a perfect combination for your pre or post-wedding pampering. CHI, The Spa is designed to be a sanctuary in a tropical paradise. Bohemian Valentine’s Day Inspiration

As far as Valentine’s Day events go, this one is just about as pretty as it gets. With a greenery backdrop in a loose diamond design, plenty of French desserts, and an incredible embellished gown from Bree Lena topped off with a floral crown, every bit is styled to utter perfection by photographers Lori Romney Photography and Jennifer Fauset Photography.

bohemian Valentine's Day inspiration - photo by Lori Romney Photography

From the photographers, Lori Romney and Jennifer Fauset: As photographers, we loved creating this romantic, cozy, Valentine’s inspired shoot in the warmth of our Salt Lake City studio. We used a color story of pinks, reds and golds. Since Valentine’s Day makes us think of sweet treats, everything about this photo shoot was based around these amazing and delicious pastries. Our pastry chef, Dani with The Petite Pastry, went all out! The gorgeous color of her sumptuous treats made our table drip with romance. Dani amazed us with her “not cake” cakes, and this cream puff cake was divine! It added texture and interest to our entire event. Everyone involved kept sneaking the pink almond heart shaped cookies. YUM! We wanted the desserts to shine, so we asked our floral design contributor to help us with understated floral arrangements to tie in the Valentine theme. The vine wall was our favorite part! It was made from Eucalyptus that smelled of perfection. It added warmth and beauty to our walls.

Modern Heart-Themed San Francisco Wedding

We’re hours away from the official day o’ love, and this heart-themed affair is just the ticket to get the party started. Equal parts whimsical modern, it’s a lovefest brought to life by Charmed Events Group, with color happy florals from Nixon Tran of Michael Daigian Design. Keep calm and party on in the gallery from Jasmine Lee + film below by Awkward Turtle Media.

Event Venue

From Charmed Events Group…Jenny and Ansony met and fell in love in the city of San Francisco and they wanted to have a wedding that reflected their love story. They chose the City View Metreon as their venue as it has sweeping views of the city and was the perfect modern, blank slate for creating their dream wedding. Because the City View Metreon is such a large space, we brought in lots of draping to create the ambience of separate spaces for guests to enjoy. We used a bright and cheerful color palette of sherbert and melon hues as the foundation for the design elements that we brought into their wedding. All the details of their wedding incorporated these colors to create a color explosion if you will! Another strong motif of Jenny and Ansony’s wedding was in featuring their favorite love quotes.

The ceremony took place on the terrace of the City View Metreon with panoramic views of San Francisco. The wedding party entered into the ceremony space through huge panels of live, succulent walls which made the space very modern and chic. For cocktail hour, we created a gallery patterned wall with one of the couples’ favorite quotes. Guests found their names on the inverted chevron pattern that we created. Guests were invited to leave their names on painted hearts to create an art piece for the couple as a keepsake.

The reception space was grandiose with draped entrances and light teal linens that popped against their modern white chairs with blush pink cushions. Guests sat down to place settings that featured menus wrapped with an infiniti charm that paid homage to how the couple felt for one another. Each table had a custom made table number in the shape of a gold arrow to pay homage to San Francisco and the iconic “Cupid’s Span” arrow on the Embarcardero. Each table also featured a different love quote as part of the couple’s love quotes collection. We custom created a 3D geometric backdrop for the couple’s sweetheart table that added punch and whimsy to finish off the event space.

Dancing and the Dessert Bar was featured in a separate draped off area of the City View Metreon. We displayed another one of the couple’s favorite love quotes as the backdrop to the dessert bar and created custom candy favors that were color blocked in the couple’s color palette for guests to enjoy.

A Love Story 63 Years in the Making

Marriage is a masterpiece. It’s growing old together, hand-in-hand, while two souls work together as one. It’s a hand-painted work of art that takes time, patience, passion, hard work, and an endless amount of love. And this darling duo? Well, they’re the perfect example. Captured through the lens of their granddaughter Shalyn Nelson, this 63 year old love story will remind you what Valentine’s Day is all about.

From Shalyn Nelson… This is simply a reminder to the world from the lens of a granddaughter who adores her grandparents and the love they share. I want to put hope and the true meaning of marriage back into the beating hearts around the globe. We are living, breathing and experiencing a world of instant gratification and noncommittal tendencies. We are so wrapped up in seeing the “instant-polariod pictures”, and not the huge hand-painted masterpiece of marriage that takes time, patience, passion, attention to detail, and hard work. What happened to being together forever? Why does our world look down on marriage so much now? It breaks my heart and even though I am ONE person…I have felt called to somehow, someway make a change. Nobody is perfect, but LOVE…LOVE is why we are here. Love is real, it’s unique for everyone and it has the power to change our world if we let it.

Marriage should be forever. It’s finding that person you pick to love and yet, drive you crazy, day in and day out. It’s more than color schemes, gorgeous gowns, perfectly crafted tables capes, and the perfect shoes. It’s growing old, hand in hand, wrinkle after wrinkle. It’s taking two heartbeats and working together to make one. It’s letting love win, always, no matter what.

Whomever is reading this…This right here is my heart. This right here is the most important thing I have ever been a part of and put together. As you read this, I am over here behind the scenes pouring out blood, sweat and tears into this passion project. I’m calling it Love, The Nelsons Project. I’m ready to show lovers around the world that true love still exists. There are so many love stories that we don’t know of out there waiting to be shared. The hard ones, big ones, small ones, beautiful ones, and stories that can change our lives and the way we view marriage. This is my pledge and my mission to find these stories and to document them over the course of the next year.

I want to put together something truly special…so here it goes! My goal is to compile a book of old love stories and that’s where I am asking for your help. I will travel to these couples, sit down and listen to their stories, interview them, and will photograph them together. Do you know of someone who has a love story that is worth knowing about? One that is worth sharing with the world to inspire, and that will help instill the true value and purpose of marriage back into our lives? The sky is the limit here! If I can impact one…just ONE marriage, ONE woman or man who are seeking their forever…my mission in life will be fulfilled. Help me tell these stories. Please e-mail me at [email protected] and put “LTN Project- Old Love” in the subject line. I look forward to hearing from you!

There is so much more that I want to share here in this space, but please follow along my journey on instagram at @shalynnelson. Our hashtag will be #lovethenelsonsproject #oldlovebook

My grandparents have been married for 63 years. My Papaw planted a rose bush outside of their bedroom window when they built their house. He has always said, “Billie Wanda is the rose of my life…But it does have a few thorns here and there…”, which is the reason he’s holding a bushel of roses in some of the photos… 🙂

And to end this post, I’ll quote my Papaw…

“Walking through life together, but the trail’s getting short.”

From The Bride…Chase and I met on a flight from Toronto to New York City. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we were both doing consulting work in Toronto and living in New York City, making the commute back and forth on a weekly basis. One fateful Thursday evening, on a return flight, we were assigned seats next to each other (a rare, but fortunate occasion since we both normally book window seats). We spent the entire flight talking from the moment we sat down until we de-planed in New York. It sounds cliché, but from that very first encounter we both knew that there was something special between us. When we landed in New York, he took my number and shortly thereafter we had our first date.

Pretty soon we were inseparable, seeing each other every day, whether we were co-located in Toronto (Chase driving almost an hour each way to pick me up for dinners after work) or back in NYC. Our short courtship was filled with fun, adventure, excitement, and a great deal of travel. On a trip to Cabo San Lucas, soon after our one year anniversary, Chase took me on a boat to Lover’s Beach and got down on one knee. I think I said “yes” before he even asked me to marry him.

We wanted to have a wedding that was personal, intimate and centered on the union of our families. With Chase’s family being from Arizona and mine from Colorado, we decided on neutral ground – California. Nestled against the backdrop of the Topa Topa Mountains, Ojai serves as the perfect retreat. What led us to choose Ojai Valley Inn & Spa as our venue was the natural beauty of the resort grounds and the serenity that it elicits, as well as the amazing staff. Ojai truly was the perfect location for our dream wedding as well as a hidden jewel that we knew our family and friends would enjoy.

I stumbled upon Kara Delay of Love This Day Events very early on, and in viewing her portfolio I connected with her work immediately. I decided to hire her before I even had the venue, much less the state, confirmed. With an abundance of inspiration, Kara served as my cornerstone and siphon, pulling together all my ideas (and filtering out the bad ones) into a cohesive vision and plan. In addition, she directed me to excellent vendors such as our florist, Toast.

Our vision for the wedding was simple and understated elegance, infused with organic and natural elements. We let the terrain and natural flora guide the design. Complementing the natural beauty of the Herb Garden, we decided to use a lot of green foliage (seeded eucalyptus, olive, rosemary, and other foraged greenery) along with a variety of white garden roses and peonies, sprinkling in light grey as an accent color.

My favorite moment of the day was standing at the ceremony before our officiant with the love of my life. We worked with our officiant – a pastor Chase has known since middle school – to create a ceremony that was very personal and special to us. We chose literary and biblical readings to be incorporated, as well as the Apache wedding prayer, a nod to my husband’s Native American heritage. We finished the ceremony by reciting our handwritten vows to one another. We were anxious about writing our own vows, but it was important to both of us that these words and promises were our own.

My favorite wedding detail was my jewelry, all custom designed and expertly crafted by my new sister-in-law, Lindsey Almquist of EmmaQuist Jewelry. Not only did she create my gorgeous Asscher-cut engagement ring, but both of our wedding bands as well. The bands feature the “Forget Me Not” floral design, prevalent in the 18th and early 19th centuries and originating in medieval times as a symbol of faithfulness and enduring love. I wanted something simple, yet meaningful, that wouldn’t distract from the beauty my engagement ring and something that I could wear on our frequent traveling excursions. Aside from my jewelry, I loved my ‘something old, new, borrowed, and blue’. My ‘something old’ was an heirloom, vintage brooch that belonged to my great grandmother which I fastened to the base of my bouquet. My ‘something new’ was my wedding dress; a simple, yet stunning, Romona Kaveza gown made of raw silk, which exemplified the theme of the wedding and my style. My ‘something borrowed’ was a pair of baroque pearl earrings from my gracious mother-in-law. Finally, my something blue was a blue ribbon from a card I made for my dad when I was a little girl that my mom sewed into my dress.

When the day finally arrived, it all felt like a dream: from walking down the winding pathway through the Herb Garden with my father to the sea of sparklers bidding us farewell…

After exchanging vows in the intimate and magical Herb Garden, our guests sipped a lavender infused cocktail, our signature drink, and ate an assortment of hors d’oeuvres under the garden pergola as the golden sun faded and the Topa Topa Mountains were lit ablaze with a vibrant, pink hue. Grey pashminas’ were provided to our guests to stay warm as the sun went down and the brisk evening chill set in. At dusk, guests were escorted to the terracotta-tiled Anacapa Terrace to dine under a canopy of strung café lighting. Tables were covered with light grey linen table clothes and adorned with candles. The long head table was lined with a garland of olive branches and other green foliage. Set amongst the foliage were hurricane vases of varying height, illuminating the entire terrace with a spectacular glow. Two Spanish guitarists along with a percussionist serenaded us with Latin music as we dined on Wild Salmon and Oven Roasted Chicken. At the end of our meal, guests leisurely enjoyed cigars on the terrace, while dancing commenced in the ballroom.

The night concluded with a sparkler sendoff. We are extremely blessed to have had such a special night, sharing our love with our friends and family, and we are grateful to have had Diana McGregor so exquisitely capture the evening and the memories that we will cherish forever.

The planning, design and execution were superb and I cannot praise enough the people who understood and shared my vision and who went above and beyond to produce a beautiful event. Many thanks to all of the great people who worked so hard to make the weekend in Ojai so memorable!

Tropical Glam Wedding in Palm Springs

If you’re a longtime follower of the blog, you know we have a weak spot for Palm Springs weddings. If this is your first visit, let this wedding from Studio Castillero and CCL Weddings & Events be an introduction to the amazingness that is Palm Springs! Barbara and Akiva’s wedding was in no short supply of gorgeous fashion, jaw-dropping scenery, and thoughtful details like antique broach escort cards that make our hearts sing.

tropical glam wedding in Palm Springs - photo by Studio Castillero

From the bride, Barbara: Akiva and I were living in Michigan in the middle of the polar vortex when we were planning our wedding and we were freezing. As a result, we knew we wanted to be somewhere warm, and we’d been to Palm Springs before and enjoyed it. I wanted the style to be vintage and romantic and I wanted it to feel relaxed/comfortable. Since Akiva is Jewish and his religious background is very important to him, we wanted to weave parts of his heritage into the ceremony as well.

Elegant Modern Wedding at the Asian Art Museum

Dear readers, today we have a wedding that couldn’t be more beautiful if it tried. What else can you expect when you have a dream team like Encarnacion Photography, Enjoy Events Co., and Shotgun Floral Studio, though? These San Francisco vendors brought Jennifer and Armello’s wedding day vision to a reality in the best way possible, with gold and copper details, geometric accents, and heaps of modern elegance.

elegant modern wedding at the Asian Art Museum - photo by Encarnacion Photography

From the bride, Jennifer: We wanted modern elegance, with highlights of gold + copper, and lots of bright floral/greenery to accent our color scheme. We met during college at the University of San Francisco, so St. Ignatius Church (the church on campus, and also where we graduated together) was our only choice for our ceremony. Not to mention how gorgeous it is with its high ceilings and ornate architectural details, it was the perfect place for us. And we just fell in love with Asian Art Museum’s tall marble columns, around which our cocktail hour was held, and Samsung Hall for our reception with it’s large windows, high ceilings, and beautiful center chandelier.
